Tierra Roja vineyard is a four-acre best-kept secret that was planted hillside in 1989 in Oakville. The land has been tended by Linda Neal since the late eighties, and since 2010 has only sold the fruit to TOR Wines. The vineyard was named in honor of its soil, iron-rich red volcanic soils with large red rocks throughout hailing from the Vaca Mountains. The west-facing steep and terraced hillside slopes reach ideal ripeness from the classically Oakville warm afternoon sun. After harvest, the grapes are left on their skins post-primary fermentation. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak.
Aromatically the wine is dark and complex, with ripe dark fruit flavors and a touch of black pepper. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with an almost chewy characteristic, smooth tannins, and a lingering flavor of dried Mediterranean herbs.
