Originally Keefer Ranch, located in the southwestern corner of Green Valley in the Russian River Valley, was planted in 1988 by Marcy and Robert Keefer. Marcy continued to farm the Ranch with 13 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted to it for 29 years, of which 11 years in Failla began to work with the Keefers. The vines grow upon beds of sandy goldridge loam just below the fog line providing a desirable cool climate influence. The grapes were harvested near the end of September and were 20% cluster, native yeast fermented before being aged for 11 months in new French oak. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Aromatically the wine has notes of bright, juicy red cherries as well as an unmistakable bramble perfume. On the palate, the wine is rich with flavors of red berry pie, lovely baking spices, and balancing acidity.
Keefer Ranch Vineyard was planted in 1988 by Marcy Keefer and her husband Robert, a retired doctor who took night classes on grape farming before diving into the deep end and establishing the site. Eleven years later, a handshake deal with a certain Pittsburgher would create Failla's first vineyard-designate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Now, much to our delight, Failla Wines and Keefer Ranch Vineyard seem to be inexorably entwined.
The site lies in the southwestern-most part of the Green Valley of Russian River Valley, an area noted for its intense morning fog and sandy Goldridge series soils. This combination makes Keefer Ranch a site that provides balanced water, nutrition, and sunlight; all important factors in delivering high-quality, personality-driven fruit. Currently, 13 planted acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are available under the Keefer Ranch name. Failla receives the majority of Marcy's production, and each year the wines we make from this exceptional site remind us why we got into this business in the first place.
