"The almost-16% alcohol is difficult to ignore here, as it seems to blow away the nuances that these Woodward Canyon Merlots are usually so good at expressing. As a result, the fruit seems simple, with sweet berry and hints of oranges. It's round and concentrated, but not as textural and detailed as past vintages."

"Broad and spicy, transparent at the core, with a woodsy note wafting through the crisp black cherry and clove flavors that linger on the vivid finish. Best from 2014 through 2019."

2009 Woodward Canyon Merlot Columbia
Woodward Canyon Winery

This 2009 Columbia Valley Merlot was produced exclusively from grapes grown at Weinbau Vineyard. This mature south facing vineyard is comprised predominantly of loamy sands and is perfectly situated on a south facing bench north of the Columbia River in south central Washington State. The 2009 vintage was warm but not extreme with fruit ripened fully and ready for harvest by the middle of September.

Production Notes and General Characteristics: This Merlot was punched down by hand two times per day in small 2000 liter stainless steel tanks. After pressing, settling, and racking the various lots were moved to French barrels for aging and maturation. In the summer of 2011, following final racking, the wine was assembled and bottled and laid down in our cellars for additional development. The wine shows extraordinary complexity with higher toned fruit nicer acidity than several recent vintages. The Weinbau Vineyard has produced a complex flavor profile of generous cherry, oak, spice and coffee; I pick up notes of toasted coconut and vanilla in the aroma. Rich fruit and fully mature tannins make this wine generous and balanced enough for drinking now, yet with the proportion and structure enough to age well for six to eight years.
