Robert Parker
Woodward Canyon Winery, 2010 Woodward Chardonnay Washington State
92
"The 2010 Chardonnay was sourced from the winery's estate vineyard and the Celilo Vineyard and was aged in 20% new oak for 6 months. It displays a fragrant nose of poached pear, spiced apple, and hints of tropical fruit with the oak fully integrated. Creamy on the palate with the fruit nicely framed by the vibrant acidity of the 2010 vintage, it is likely to evolve for 1-2 years and drink well through 2017."

2010 Woodward Chardonnay Washington State
Woodward Canyon Winery
Vintage Specific Characteristics:
This 2010 Washington State Chardonnay was produced from Woodward Canyon Estate chardonnay (Clone 108) in the northwestern corner of the Walla Walla Valley and chardonnay (Wente Clone) grown at Celilo Vineyard in the Columbia River Gorge. The grapes were harvested by hand, sorted, and whole cluster pressed. The yield averaged 2.3 tons per acre, with all grapes harvested by late September. This Washington State Chardonnay reflects the cooler, more moderate vintage from which it came. The Walla Walla Valley influence is noticeable given the percentage of fruit from the Estate Vineyard; the Celilo vineyard continues to bring elegance and balance.
Production Notes and General Characteristics:
This wine was fermented in 100% French burgundy barrels; roughly 20% new. Beautifully mature flavors of ripe pear, apple, and peach marry perfectly with wonderful acidity. Whole cluster pressing has given delineated fruit which integrates beautifully with aromatic notes of vanilla, spice and toasted hazelnut. Finally, the oak is understated by our choice and is in wonderful proportion with the fruit and acidity.
Fully mature fruit shows in the mouth; the texture is smooth and rich. The finish is complex, generous, and long. And while this wine may be consumed now, it will benefit substantially with a year in bottle and should continue to improve for another several years, with proper cellaring. |
