"The 2007 Chardonnay was sourced from the Celilo Vineyard (50%), a superb Chardonnay site in the Columbia Gorge AVA, and the winery's own estate vineyard (50%). It was aged in 20% new oak and underwent partial malolactic fermentation. Light gold-colored, it reveals an expressive bouquet of toasty oak, pear, tropical fruits, and a hint of butterscotch. Creamy textured, round and concentrated, the wine has intense flavors, bright acidity, and a lengthy finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years."

"Subtle aromas of stone fruits, lemon drop, apple and hazelnut. Sweet, lush and broad, but with good freshness and shape to the stone fruit and orange flavors. Proprietor Rick Small doesn't stir the lees of his chardonnay anymore, and partial malolactic fermentation has left this wine with sound acidity. The crop level here was just 2.5 tons per acre, according to Small."

2007 Woodward Canyon, Chardonnay, Columbia Valley
Woodward Canyon Winery
This 2007 Washington State Chardonnay was produced from Wente clone chardonnay grown at Celilo Vineyard (50%) in the Columbia River Gorge and Woodward Canyon Estate chardonnay (50%) in the northwestern edge of the Walla Walla Valley. The grapes were harvested by hand, sorted and whole cluster pressed. The yield averaged around 2.5 tons per acre with all grapes harvested by the middle of October. This wine was fermented in 100% French burgundy barrels - 30% new and 70% older barrels. Beautifully mature flavors of ripe pear, apple and peach marry perfectly with crisp acidity. Whole cluster pressing gives delineated fruit which integrates beautifully with notes of vanilla, cream and toasted hazelnut. The oak is more understated and is in wonderful proportion with the alcohol, fruit and acidity.
Fully mature fruit shows in the mouth; the texture is smooth and silky. The finish is complex, generous and long. While this wine may be consumed now, it will benefit substantially with a year in bottle and should continue to improve for another several years with proper cellaring. |
