Novy Family Wines, 2011 Novy Sauvignon Blanc Russian River

"Vibrant, with pretty honeysuckle grace notes to the mango, Meyer lemon and peach flavors. The intensity carries through on the long, juicy finish. Drink now."

The 2011 vintage is our second vintage to produce Sauvignon Blanc from the Crinella Vineyard on Hall Road in Santa Rosa, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. In fact, we are so pleased that, after the 2011 harvest, we signed a longer-term contract for the fruit.

The 2011 vintage was noticeable cooler than 2010 and without the pronounced August and September heat spikes. Thus we were able to let the grapes hang into late September (harvest was on September 27, prior to the October 3rd rain), and yet pick the grapes at lower brix (22.9) and very good levels of natural acidity (3.24ph and 8.3 TA).

We whole-cluster-pressed the grapes when the wine arrived and drained the juice immediately to tank where we let it settle for 24 hours, then draining it off the gross lees. At that point in time we added yeast and drained a portion of the juice to oak (primarily older French oak) while the remained was left behind to ferment in tank. Upon the conclusion of fermentation we added sulfur, to prevent the wine from going thru malolactic fermentation and retain its crisp acidty. It was then bottled in early April, 2012.

The 2011 Novy Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc is intense with pineapple, quince, and orange peel flavors. The wine is expansive on the mid-palate with a creaminess that is detailed by crisp acidity and hints of minerality and underlying grassiness. A complex and yet immensely satisfying drink that is enjoyable both on its own and with food.
