Bodegas Quinta da Muradella, 2012 Gorvia Tinto (SV)

"The red 2015 Gorvia is produced with grapes cropped from the same one-hectare vineyard as the white of the same name, on a south-facing slate slope in the surroundings of the Monterrei Castle. It's a Mencía-based blend, with some 5% Bastardo and Caíño Redondo. It fermented in an open stainless steel vat with 60% full clusters and a very long maceration, was kept there for six months and then put in used 300- and 500-liter casks. There is a combination of ripeness and freshness that is unusual. None of the wines here show any oak, and they are on the elegant, rather than powerful, side. Having said that, 2015 is very complete, and this has good stuffing, with the finesse I expect in the reds from Muradella. 3,000 bottles were filled in May 2017."

Bodegas Quinta da Muradella

Gorvia Red is a single vineyard wine made by Bodegas Quinta da Muradella in the DO region of Monterrei. The philosophy behind Gorvia is to produce a vino de finca (single vineyard wine) from the northwest side of the region, in the Pazos de Monterrei subzone.

The blend is composed of 90% Mencia, 5% Bastardo, and 5% Caino Redondo, which are Organically grown vines planted in 1987. The soils are made of decomposed slate and clay soil at 460 meters (1,509 ft.) elevation.

The wine undergoes an extended maceration for 30 days to extract optimal phenolics before going into barrel. No filtration or clarification take place. The wine is aged for 14 months in 1-2 year old French Oak barrels, and 10 months in bottle before release.
