VINEYARD Fruit off of 30 year old vines planmted in the Girard Vineyard in the Gold Hill district of El Dorado. Sitting at 1,400 feet in elevation, it is lower in altitude than the other Rhone vineyards in his portfolio. This north-western facing vineyard's unique topography results in extremely pronounced diurnals. This is because the Mataro planting sits in a canyon that plummets down to the nearby American river bringing cool breezes up from the river during the day, and channeling cool mountain air down during the evening
SOIL Granite and quartz.
VINIFICATION AND AGING Fruit was picked on September 21st and came in at about 3 tons per acre, very low by Sierra Foothills standards. Fermentation was 100% whole cluster in open top vessels with no additions, as is the standard at Haarmeyer Cellars. All neutral french for elevage.
